By doing a bit of calendar juggling, you may on some occasions obtain get a few more days off in connection with your holiday if you place your holiday strategically compared to the public holidays for the year.

But what will it look like in 2026? We will take you through the year.

You may already have noticed, but right at the beginning of January, you may treat yourself to a long weekend to recover from the New Year's Eve hangover by taking a single day off on Friday, 2 January.

The next golden opportunity arises at Easter, which in 2026 falls in early April. By taking three days off on 30 March, 31 March and 1 April, you can wave goodbye to your colleagues on Friday, 27 March and say I'll be seeing you on Tuesday, 7 April.

If you are employed by a company which has a collective agreement with Finansforbundet, you are typically entitled to four additional public holidays with full pay per year.

One of these is the Friday after Ascension Day. This means you will have a long weekend starting on Thursday, 14 May. However, if you have plenty of holiday left and need a bit more time off, you could choose to take time off on the three weekdays leading up to Ascension Day. For three days off you will achieve nine consecutive days of holiday, including the weekends.

Constitution Day speeches on a Friday

Next year, Whit Monday will fall on 25 May, which makes it less suitable for combining with additional days off as in other years. In 2025, for example, it came right after Constitution Day, which was a Thursday, implying that you could extend your weekend even further by taking the Friday off.

You will not have that opportunity in 2026, but having the Monday off is, in any event, always nice.

Constitution Day is also a day off according to Finansforbundet's collective agreements. If you are planning on attending any Constitution Day speeches next year, you will have to do so on a Friday.

Employer-friendly Christmas or not?

After Constitution Day, paid days off are rare, but hopefully your summer holiday will keep you going.

And before you know it, another year has passed and we have reached December. Then the question is whether the public holidays are to your or your employer's advantage?

Next year, your employer appears to be in luck because one of the public holidays of Christmas, Boxing Day, falls on a Saturday. However, if you take three days off from 28 to 30 December, you will get a Christmas break of 11 days.
