"'Your profile is no longer a match.' "That was the explanation my colleagues and I were offered when several of us were all let go at once."

After nearly a quarter of a century at Danske Bank, Rikke Sunke Larsen was laid off in a round of cutbacks. But even before the period in which she was released from her duties had ended, she was rehired by Danske Bank, and today she holds the title of senior IT application specialist.

At first, it appeared as if there were no chance of finding a suitable job for her or most of her otherwise very experienced IT colleagues within the bank.

“We were told that attempts had been made to reassign us to other areas, but that they had been unsuccessful. That was certainly bad news. But when you’ve worked at the same place for so many years, you’ve also come to know lots of people throughout the bank,” says Rikke Sunke Larsen, who received a glowing recommendation from her manager.

Family of colleagues

For many years, she worked at Danske Data in Nykøbing Falster, where her colleagues were practically like family. When this department was shut down, some were transferred to the bank's headquarters, where they were assigned to different departments but remained in touch.

“This opened up the opportunity to get to know people in many different parts of the building.” “And that’s how I ended up staying at the bank.”

Because a new colleague of a former colleague told Rikke Sunke Larsen that there were actually two internal job openings that were a perfect match for her qualifications. If you are interested? One of those jobs is now hers. She was, as she puts it, headhunted internally after being laid off.

Rikke Sunke Larsen has always cultivated her network, including through going shooting, but it was her Danske Bank network that secured her the internal job.

Get to know your colleagues

“It’s a bit odd to be told by management and HR that they have tried in vain to reassign us, when these two positions had been posted on our internal job portal right up until the layoffs.” “They had been removed shortly before because no one had applied. That's why I didn’t see them myself.”

This experience has reinforced her belief in how important it is to have a strong network of her own; both inside and outside the bank.
“If I hadn’t had that, I probably wouldn’t be working at Danske Bank today, where I've so far spent 26 years. So I really recommend others to do the same.”

For her, this comes naturally:

“I make a point of getting to know my colleagues. I like knowing them on a personal level too.”

“Your network is essential in a situation where you’re suddenly told you need to find something else to do.””Netværk er supervigtigt i en situation, hvor man pludselig får besked om, at man skal finde på noget andet."
- Rikke Sunke Larsen

Outside working hours, she also maintains a network of contacts, partly through her interest in shooting.

“A network may bring in lots of things, new ideas, inspiration. But it's also essential in a situation where you’re suddenly told you need to find something else to do. “So my advice would definitely be to reach out to your colleagues and get to know them before it's too late.”

Ever since 2008, when she was told that she and her colleagues at Danske Data in Nykøbing Falster would have to relocate to Ejby near Glostrup – where the IT headquarters was located at the time – or face termination, she has been aware that major changes can happen suddenly.

“I make sure to stay on top of things, and I keep up with the latest developments in my field, even though it's difficult with a busy schedule.”
