LONG-TERM IT EMPLOYEE AT DANSKE BANK: AI IS BEING FORCED ON US

Management is forcing AI on employees without allowing them time to learn. “I don't want to spend my time off work on it just because the bank wants to save resources.”

“I don't mind using AI when it makes sense – but it sometimes feels as if the only thing that makes management happy is AI.”

Wanting to remain anonymous, a long-term IT employee of Danske Bank has told the newsletter Finans that the bank's IT employees are under unreasonable pressure to use AI.

“Using AI often takes more time than doing the tasks ourselves. “And for the type of work I do, AI simply isn’t good enough,” says the IT employee, who gladly uses AI for other tasks, such as drafting emails, guides, minutes of meetings, etc.

ACCORDING TO A LONG-TERM IT EMPLOYEE AT DANSKE BANK, AI MUST BE USED EVEN WHEN IT MAKES NO SENSE.

Forced on us

Nonetheless, management now measures how much employees use AI, the IT employee explains.

“I feel it's being forced on us, and we're encouraged to include it as a target in our performance reviews. This puts an unreasonable pressure on us as employees.”

“ALL LEARNING TAKES TIME, BUT THERE SHOULD BE NO PRESSURE”

The IT employee is critical of the invitation to spend time testing AI on their own:

“We’re so short on resources that I simply can’t see how to find time to ‘play around’ with AI.”

It is not fair to be asked to do so outside working hours, states the IT employee:

“All learning takes time, but there should be no pressure – and I'm not spending my time off work on it just because the bank wants to save resources.”

REPLY FROM DANSKE BANK: AI CAN BE DEMANDING

News for members presented the long-term IT employee's criticism to Danske Bank and received a response from the Communication department:

"We acknowledge that introducing AI is a major change, and that developing new skills while handling day-to-day operations can be demanding.

Danske Bank is therefore making targeted efforts to support employees through the work changes brought by AI, including by providing access to AI tools, AI training and ongoing skills enhancement.

Approximately 90 per cent of our employees have completed training in generative AI, and about 10,000 have participated in more role-based and targeted training. We offer a wide range of training and skill-building courses and multiple communities that share experiences, develop and support our colleagues in their use of AI.

We find that learning and skills development are best achieved through a combination of training and practical use. To that end, we focus on both courses and integration of AI into specific assignments with the support of colleagues, AI specialists and internal networks.

Our employees naturally have different experiences and needs, which is why we continuously listen to feedback on both learning requirements and the use of AI.”
